2008 20p coin - the Royal Shield of Arms (undated)

PRESS RELEASE

ROYAL MINT 20 PENCE COINS

ERROR – NO DATE

EXPERT WARNS LUCKY FINDERS TO BE CAUTIOUS

An expert on coin, stamp and banknote errors urges the public to be wary of offers to buy the error coins.
“The value of such rare items can only become clear when the number released is made known. Current offers to buy a range from £30 - £120 with rumours of much higher valuations”
“I would encourage finders to wait a while in case the coins are much rarer then we expect” Said David James, a professional numismatist for 40 years
“I feel the public may confuse the website of the London Mint Office with that of The Royal Mint and would urge caution”
“We handle errors which can be hundreds of pounds” He added “and we have such error stamps on our website”

“We haven’t purchased any missing date 20p coins, yet – so it will be interesting to see how many turn up”

“At least it won’t be the same as the missing Queen’s necklace on the £2 coin – this turned out to be a myth!!
